How to Use a Suction Machine at Home
- Wash your hands and wear clean gloves.
- Connect the tubing from the collection jar to a new catheter, then plug in and switch on the machine.
- Check the suction by closing the tube end with your thumb for a moment.
- Insert the catheter gently without suction, then apply suction only while slowly pulling it out. Keep each pass to 10–15 seconds.
- Let the patient breathe between passes. When finished, rinse the tubing with clean water, throw away the catheter and empty the jar.

Safe Use Tips
- Use the catheter size your doctor or nurse recommends. Adults usually need Fr 12–14 for oral or nasal suctioning and Fr 14–16 for tracheostomy suctioning.
- Never reuse a catheter. Use a new one for each session.
- Clean and empty the collection jar before the contents reach the maximum fill mark.
- On portable models, follow the 30-minutes-on, 30-minutes-rest cycle to protect the motor.
