How Long Does an Oxygen Cylinder Last?

A standard cylinder holds about 1,360 litres of oxygen and a 40 Liter cylinder about 6,000 litres. To estimate backup time, divide the litres by the flow rate (LPM) to get minutes. For example, 1,360 ÷ 2 = 680 minutes, about 11 hours.

Estimates are for a full cylinder at continuous flow. A portable cylinder holds less oxygen, so it runs for fewer hours. Many families keep two cylinders so one is always ready while the other is being refilled.

How to Check That a Cylinder Is Medical Grade

Only medical oxygen is safe for patients. Industrial oxygen is made for welding and cutting and is not tested for breathing. Check these points before you accept any cylinder, from us or from anyone else:

• Label: the cylinder or its tag should clearly say medical oxygen. This is the most reliable check.
• Colour: do not judge by colour alone. Many medical oxygen cylinders here are black with a white top (shoulder), and some newer ones are fully white.
• Test date: look for the pressure-test date stamped near the neck. A very old or missing stamp is a warning sign.
• Gauge: on delivery, the regulator gauge should show a full cylinder.
• Valve: it should be clean, with no oil or grease, and should not hiss when closed.

Doctors often recommend home oxygen for COPD, severe asthma, recovery after pneumonia or surgery, and elderly or bedridden patients. A pulse oximeter helps you track SpO2 at home.

• Keep the cylinder upright and secured on its trolley or to a fixed support. Never drag or drop it.
• No smoking, gas stoves, candles or mosquito coils nearby, because oxygen makes fire spread fast.

• Store in a ventilated place away from sunlight and heat, and close the valve after use.
